    IRCC Extends Open Work Permit Pilot till Next Year

    The Government of Canada has recently announced the extension of the Open Work Permit Pilot. The Pilot was scheduled to expire on January 31, 2019, but it will be extended till July 31, 2020. Since the start of the program in 2014, this is the fourth extension of the program.

     

    What is the Open Work Permit Pilot Program?

    This program is also called the Spousal Sponsorship program. It is a section of the Family Class immigration. This program enables any qualified spouse or common-law partner, who are sponsored under the Spousal And Common-law Partner Sponsorship, to apply for an open work permit.

    An open work permit is one that is independent of the employer or job position.

     

    How to Apply for Open Work Permit?

    Candidates have to submit a work permit application along with their sponsorship application. Applicants must have valid temporary resident status, either as a visitor, student or worker, and live at the same address as their sponsor, in order to be eligible.

    Manitoba introduced its new immigration pathway, the Career Employment Pathway. It was started on November 30, 2018. It is available to international students who have graduated from any post-secondary universities/colleges in Manitoba. It is one of the three pathways available in Manitoba International Education Stream (others include Graduate Internship Pathway and Student Entrepreneur Pathway).

    What is Career Employment Pathway?

    This pathway is intended for graduates to find long-term employment an occupation that aligns with their field of education and training. The candidate must show the intention of residing in Manitoba after being nominated.

    The requirements for eligibility include:

    • must have a job offer for full-time employment in an occupation that’s considered in-demand in Manitoba and is compatible with their training and education.
    • have completed a bridging program and passed the initial stage of certification as determined by the appropriate supervisory body.
    • has a minimum CLB 7.

    Interested candidates can apply immediately after graduating. They have to submit an EOI.

    What is EOI?

    EOI serves as ‘pre-application.’ Candidates have to answer questions based on work experience, education, and proficiency in English or French, etc. The candidates are given a score and then ranked based on their score.
